What is a Postpartum Doula?
The term doula stems from the Greek word meaning servant.
When first-time parents or even seasoned parents give birth to a new precious life (or multiple little lives), a postpartum doula can be present, serving and caring for the family, the first day the new parents and baby arrive home from the hospital. A postpartum doula will care for the new mother and child - in the home - in many of the same ways that nurses cared for the two after the birth in the hospital, plus more!
Some examples of what a Postpartum Doula may do include:
Teaching Breastfeeding & Bottle-Feeding
Infant Care- including swaddling and sleep-training
Shopping and Errands
Cooking, Laundry, & Light Housekeeping
Teach what is typical and atypical for both baby and mom
Support mother’s mental health to help prevent or reduce postpartum depression
Essentially, the doula will serve the new mother, baby, and family in every way possible, bolstering the family to flourish!
